How Rush Video Edits Actually Get Delivered

A rush edit is won or lost before anyone opens the timeline. The deliverable gets smaller, the footage arrives organised, and the notes come back in one round from one person. Working faster is not the lever, and pretending it is produces a late, worse video.

Expect to pay for it. Editors report a 20 to 25% premium for anything inside 48 hours, and considerably more for overnight, which is the honest price of somebody rearranging their week.

What rush actually costs

From r/freelance: "I charge a 20-25% premium for turnaround in 48 hours or less, but that's not keeping me up at night or anything"

For the tighter end, from r/editors: "I treat weekend work as 1.5x anyway, and any time beyond 6-8 hours 2x."

And a second editor on the same principle, in r/editors: "I charge time and a half for hours 9 and 10, and double time past 10 hours in a day."

On what counts as urgent at all, from r/editors: "Our expectations are usually 48 hour turn around, but often 24 is asked for. Definitely charge a rush fee."

So 48 hours is a normal professional turnaround, and 24 is a favour with a price. Knowing which one you are asking for changes how the conversation goes.

Cut the scope, not the corners

When time is short, decide in advance what gets dropped. If nobody decides, the editor decides at 2am, and they will guess wrong about what mattered to you.

• Shorter target length. Ten minutes instead of eighteen is half the work, not a compromise.
• One music bed rather than a scored edit with changes.
• Captions on the hook only, or none, if the deadline is genuinely tight.
• Motion graphics dropped to simple titles.
• Colour left consistent rather than graded shot by shot.

Notice that none of those touch pacing or structure, which is what viewers actually notice. Rush edits go badly when the savings come out of the cut itself instead of the decoration on top of it.

The setup that makes speed possible

• Footage delivered organised, with the good takes marked. This alone can halve a rush job.
• Proxies transcoded before the edit starts, so playback never stutters.
• One named approver, not a committee.
• One consolidated round of notes, at a time agreed in advance.
• The brief and conventions already written down from previous work.

Cutting around 5,000 videos a year, the difference between a rush that lands and one that slips is almost always the state of the footage and the number of people giving notes. Two stakeholders who disagree will cost more hours than the deadline had spare.

Give notes in a form that can be acted on fast

From r/SocialMediaMarketing: "Use screen recordings or timestamps instead of essays. You can drop comments right on the video, frame by frame, so your notes are visual and"

And on where those notes should live, from r/editors: "Use a platform like frame or Vimeo review links for feedback. That way, the stakeholders can have all their fights as comments on the video in"

That last phrasing is the useful part. Stakeholder disagreement is going to happen; the question is whether it happens on the video before the editor starts, or in the editor's inbox as contradictory instructions afterwards. On a deadline, only the first version is survivable.
